I wanted to share some fun book shelf ideas that are far from dull and boring.

These conceal hidden shelves are only $13 a piece! If you are a reader, put your own books to good use.

I don't know where these bookcases are from, but they are a great modern twist to traditional furniture.

This is kind of a strange concept, but unique none the less. Your items are held between two elastic bands. You can find further information about them by clicking on the link.

I love these eco-friendly shelves from nigel's eco store. They are made of paperboard rolls, that are stuck together with velcro. You can make your own configurations by stacking them on top of each other.

Clean Up that Cluttered Closet!

So I really wanted to blog about this subject because most people I know go through a stage when they realize how disorganized they are. I recently went through my closets and organized all the items I have that I never use, but still hold on to for that "just in case" situation. Here are my easy tips on organizing:

As I started, I realized that I have items like random wallets or unopened gifts that I will never use. Put all those kinds of items in box with a label for Goodwill.
Sort all that remaining junk into piles: Art supplies, electrical cords, light bulbs, batteries etc. I found a bunch of clear storage bins at a store that were well priced and bought a load of them.
The most important thing is to label every bin. This way in the future, you will know where to put things, instead of just sticking it in a closet. Most of the time when I put things away, it's out of sight, out of mind.
The only real way to stay out of the mess and keep organized is to always put things back where they belong. Good luck!

After I graduated from college, I moved to Dallas with a great new job and dreams of finally making it "big". However, my big dreams and Chevy Lumina weren't the only things I brought with me; I also hauled down about $25,000 in debt! It was from a combination of student loans ($21,000) and credit cards ($4,000).

I found a cheap apartment and a roommate to share the rent. There was only one catch: we were sitting on boxes and sleeping on the floor. For us, the choice was clear. We could live like poor college students or begin our adult lives in a modern, beautifully furnished apartment. Like most young adults, we thought a college degree entitled us to live the high life and opted for the latter.

Instead of being sensible, we went straight for the expensive stuff - searching for items only in big box furniture stores. With the promotions they were running, I thought I was set. After all, I wouldn't make payments for a full year! Little did I know at the time, this "deal" enticed me to buy a lot more than I could afford. For a college student, more than $1,000 dollars for a couch, coffee table and bed was too much.

For a year, the debt loomed over me. I was nearing the end of my "free year", and I hadn't saved any money. Luckily, I scrounged together enough cash to pay it off and narrowly avoided a big penalty - mostly accrued interest.

It was tough for me, but I hope my mistakes give light to something we can all learn.

Should you take advantage of 0% offers from furniture dealers?

No! This is a lesson for all of us, not just college students. Try to avoid buying furniture and decor on a 1-to-2 year 0% interest plan. It encourages you to spend more and allows you to justify taking on debt.

If you can't afford it with cash, you can't afford it all!

If you're jump starting your plan to save, trying to enhance your financial future or are a recent college grad, it's important you take control of your money. To get started, follow the plan on my website. You'll get tips on controlling your spending and learn the importance of building your $1,000 emergency fund before purchasing luxuries like furniture.

If you were like me, you couldn’t wait to buy furniture because sleeping on the floor meant you could longer stand without pain! Instead of spending all of your money, it's time to get creative with furnishing your place. Chet suggests scouring garage sales and flea markets - you can find some great deals (He posts tips to Facebook and Twitter). Also, Craigslist is a wonderful resource for used furniture.

Another tip: think about timing. If you live in a college town like New Orleans the end of the spring semester is a great time to find cheap furniture from students who are trying to clear out their rentals. Just bring a friend a long if you feel uncomfortable making the purchase on your own.

Or, try reaching out to family and friends. Often times, they'll have furniture they aren't using.

I know - buying used furniture or borrowing from family may not sound like what you had in mind, but don't dismiss the idea so quickly. Chet has great tips on how to upcycle your Grandma's 1950's couch, making it look designer and more personalized than the pleather option at a never-ending furniture store.

In the end, be smart with your design decisions. Remember: if you're willing to make a few sacrifices now, you'll begin your climb out of debt - or stay debt free - and set yourself up for success in the future.

Color of the year

According to Pantone, the color of the year is Tangerine Tango, which is a reddish orange. It is "sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with depth to it," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

1. Print and cut out the tooth pick template from this link

2. After folding each rectangle in half, pierce each with a cocktail toothpick.

Taking Down Christmas Decorations

Now that Christmas is over, we all have to start taking down all those decorations that we were so excited to put up last month. I wanted to share some tips to help you all out.

What to do with your live Christmas tree?

This is always a question asked after the holidays, we are lucky in New Orleans because the city has set up a recycling program. All you have to do is put your live Christmas tree out with the rest of your regular garbage on the days of January 5,6, and 7. The trees will be used to rebuild Louisiana's wetlands.

What to do with all the Christmas cards?

People spend so much time putting together beautiful cards with thoughtful messages to friends and loved ones. The question is, what can you do with them?

Use the front of the cards to create a Christmas scrapbook
Collect your favorite cards and create your own framed collage for next year. You can also create Christmas collage place mats for kids with construction paper and glue.
Use family photo cards in family photobooks

What to do with all your ornaments?

Used bubble wrap and tissue paper to individually wrap your ornaments. Place all your ornaments in one or two labeled boxes. Place the most important or sentimental ornaments in resealable plastic bags.
Keep purple, gold, and green ornaments out for the Mardi Gras Carnival Season.

What to do with anything else you just don't want anymore?

Take photos of your unwanted decorations while they are still being displayed. You can sell or donate them. Visit websites like Craigslist or Ebay or donate to Goodwill or The Salvation Army.

Weekend Curb Appeal

It is extremely important to keep up with your home's curb appeal. Below are some quick ways on how you can help transform your home in a weekend.

Replace your outdoor light fixtures for a fresh look. If you don't have the budget for new fixtures, buy a $4 can of spray paint from your local home improvement store. You will be amazed with the difference a fresh coat of paint will make. You can also spray your mailbox for a more uniform look.

Power wash your exterior. Summer flooding and normal wear and tear in New Orleans is a given. You can give your home a whole new look by renting a power washer and giving it a good cleaning.

Paint and replace the hardware on your front door. Use painters tape to protect glass and trim. Be sure to ask the experts at home improvement stores for tips on what paint to use.

Mow and rack your lawn! It's a tedious job, but someone has to do it. It's amazing what a little lawn care can do for a home. If you really want to add more appeal, think about planting a tree or new shrubs.

Painting your Walls Gray

It seems that gray is the new white when it comes to decorating. I wanted to give you some advise when using gray on your walls. I love to work with gray paint because it works with so many coordinating colors while still remaining neutral.

When using gray paint, I would suggest using a flat finish, not a semi gloss because it can sometimes look too industrial if there is too much of a shine.

Another trick of the trade is bringing in a lot of different kinds of light sources such as table lamps, ceiling fixtures, and sconces. These fixtures give your space warmth and versatility because of all the lighting options.

I like to use pops of color with gray, especially with accessories that you can change out throughout the year.

Thing about using a wallpaper instead of paint for a textured look.

Instructions for Light Bulb Ornaments

Good morning everyone!

I had some requests on how to make the light bulb ornaments that I have been showing on my Upcycled Christmas Decorations Tour. This is how they are made:

Paint any burnt out light bulb with acrylic paint and glitter glue. Look at clip art for some simple designs that you can free hand.
Let the paint dry. Glitter glue can take a few hours to dry hard.
Use a strong glue (from any hardware store) to adhere a ribbon to hang your new ornament.

A New Look for a Faux Christmas Tree

Did you just buy an inexpensive faux Christmas tree or have one stored in the attic? This is what you will need to give it a whole new look:

A faux tree
Snow in a can
A well ventilated space

Unpack your Christmas tree and bend each branch individually to make it look fuller.Take the tree outside or in a well ventilated space. Shake the can of snow you bought and spray the tree down in long, even strokes. Keep the can 12"-18" away from tree when spraying, make sure you do not spray the snow too thick. Let dry for about half an hour and carefully carry the tree inside. Decorate however you would like.

Hot Winter Outerwear

Today on my fashion segment for WVUE Fox 8 I talked about the hottest trends in winter outerwear. I featured two local stores on my segment today Style Lab for Men: New Orleans located at 3326 Magazine St. and Tomato 3318 Magazine St. If you were not able to watch the segment the video will be up soon or please read some tips I have for looking your best this winter.

Pack on the layers!!! Layering gives an outfit more dimension and also is important for unexpected changes in temperature. Try pairing a layered look with a tailored pair of dark denim for a great outfit that translates well from day to evening.
Military inspired outerwear. Military inspired outerwear is one of the most fashion forward trend right now.
Faux fur. The quality and production of faux furs are getting much better and most times it is very difficult to distinguish between faux and real fur. So opt for faux!
Leather Jackets. Leather jackets have never gone out of style but we are seeing more updated and fresh silhouettes on the runway.
Cable Knit. Classic cable knit but updated. Cable knit has never gone out of style but this year we are seeing cable knit updated in to more modern designs.

Light Bulb Christmas Tree and Wreath

Thank you to those of you who have been emailing me about the show today. I wanted to post the instructions on how to make the light bulb Christmas trees and wreath that you saw on the show today. The method of making the trees and wreath are the same, we just used different kinds of light bulbs.

What you will need:

Cardboard
Old light bulbs
Glue that can be used with glass
Old ribbon

1. Cut out a cardboard circle template.

2. Lay out the light bulbs in a circle using the template as a guide for accuracy.

3. Drip glue where light bulbs meet. I used more glue on the bottom tiers to make sure the tree and wreath were stable.

4. Keep building new layers, using less light bulbs each time.

Voila!

Painting on Tiles

Painting over tile is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to get who whole new look for an unappealing space. However, before you start, make sure this is your only option. Painted tile can be hard to clean, you cannot scrub it, and you definitely do not want to use it in wet, busy spaces.

How to paint tile:

Clean tile thoroughly, let dry.
Use painters tape around borders for crisp lines

3. Paint a good primer (ask your local home improvement store for recommendations) on the tiles with a clean brush. Make sure you use straight, even strokes - dry primer according to directions, normally 38 hours.

4. Next use a latex based paint for the main color. Again make straight even strokes. Let paint dry.

5. You can finish off with a urethane. Use even strokes to coat everything you painted - let dry.

Try painting your own design for an accent in your home that would be one-of-a-kind.

This painting technique should not be used on floors or any areas with heavy traffic.

Halloween is on Monday, but many of us are celebrating this weekend. Instead of carving your pumpkins for decoration, think about painting them instead. If pumpkins are displayed in a cool environment, they can last until Thanksgiving. Just remember to paint a holiday-neutral design on the pumpkin.

Painted Blood Glasses

This is a sneak preview of my FOX 8 segment tomorrow morning at 8:10am. The segment will be about how to decorate for a Halloween party. These glasses can be given to your guests as party favors, they are extremely easy and INEXPENSIVE to make!

How to:

Buy glasses for $1 at the dollar store.
Wipe glasses off with rubbing alcohol.
Use Vitrea 160 glass paint to make drip marks for the appearance of blood.
Let dry 24 hours.
Put glasses in cold oven and set to bake at 325 degrees.
When oven comes to 350 degree temperature, set timer for 40 minutes.
When timer goes off, turn off oven and open door slightly so that glasses do not cool off too quickly.

Pine Cone Pendent

Since tomorrow is the first day of fall, I thought this pine cone pendant would get us all into the fall spirit.

The pendent is made by Pavel Eekra who is a Russian designer. This extraordinary light consists of 56 plates and screws. It doesn't have an internal skeleton so that the light casts shadows off of the individual plates.

Glass Kitchen Countertop

This recycled countertop is elegant and reminds me how beautiful leftovers can be. You can completely customize you countertops and backsplashes by choosing different thicknesses, textures, colors, edge treatments etc.

Another application the manufacturer offers is an ‘artistic application.’ You can choose to add other colors to the clear glass to create one-of-a-kind designs.

This relaxing image of an English countryside living space is the perfect example of how lanterns can be used as an accent and bring in visual interest.

If you wanted something a little more funky, you could use these Pressick Lanterns. They come in a variety of colors and when grouped together, they create are a fun mood to a room.

I love the traditional look of these woven lanterns they give off a rustic/Tuscan vibe. If you do not like to burn candles in your home because of children and pets, you can always use a battery powered candle. They give off the same glow, without the worry.

This hanging metal star lantern is unusually pleasant, this would look really good grouped together with other stars or other lantern shapes.

I saw this picnic table while browsing the internet. It is by a sculptor/artist named Michael Beitz who has a number of other functional sculptures that are truly unique. This picnic table is made of laminated poplar and marine epoxy.

DIY Glass Magnets

Materials you will need:

Large glass gems (you can buy them at the dollar store)
A printed picture of photo
Clear drying glue
Rubber cement
Strong magnets

Use a clear drying glue to stick photo to gem, let dry

Use a strong glue to adhere magnet to gem (we used rubber cement). If you use hot glue or a weaker glue, the gem will fall off.

DIY Fleur de Lis Door Hanger

This DIY project was shown on FOX 8 Live this morning. Here are some instructions on how to make it:

1. Use a box cutter to cut out a fleur de lis shape out of a card board box.

2. Ball up newspaper and tape it to the card board cut-out (you can ball up as much newspaper as you like, depending on how much of a relief you want)

3. Use packaging tape to cover the whole piece, do not leave spaces in between tape.

4. Mix SMALL BATCHES of Plaster of Paris and cover taped surface. This may take a few layers.

5. Drill hole in back so that it can be mounted to a wall or door.

6. Spray paint desired color

7. Use polyurethane if the piece is to be used outdoors

This Studio Hausen’s Tears Off wallpaper is so fun; it lets YOU be the designer! Instead of having the regular printed wallpaper, this one comes in sheets with a pattern cut into it. The user then can choose his/her own path of design. I think you could make it even more unique by painting the wall behind the wallpaper in a variety of colors.

Summer homes are meant for people to enjoy time together. Having a house with an open concept, especially in areas like the living and dining room, are beneficial for achieving that goal. The negative aspect for having a house that is too open is that people also crave privacy, especially if they are sharing the space with a lot of other people. There lies the benefit of having more closed off rooms, privacy. The negative side of a more closed concept can make a property feel smaller than it is.

When it comes to functionality, no one wants to go to a summer home & fight over bathroom time like they do at home. Renters want something different than what they’re used to at home and usually more luxurious. Having a property with a lot of bedrooms makes a great vacation home to rent because people tend to vacation with friends and family. The housing trend for this year calls for bigger, more luxurious bathrooms. Having a lot of bathrooms or adding one may not be always be an option in a rental property. However, giving whatever bathrooms are available a face lift to give them a spa feel would be a must have for renters.

A hot trend of new homes is outdoor living space. This doesn't include your typical space of plastic patio furniture and pink flamingos in the garden. People want outdoor kitchens, living rooms and garden rooms. The outdoor space can now be created to be an extensive of your property's square footage instead of a separate area. In terms of flow, keep the outdoor kitchen close to the indoor kitchen.

When it comes to interior design, work with what you have. If you own a home on a beach, play up the beach theme by using inspiration but all the water and sand elements around you. If you have a cabin on a lake, use the natural elements and colors around you for design inspiration. Remember that renters are looking for luxury when they vacation so trying to incorporate a lavish feel into the rooms is a benefit.

Classically Chic White

Nothing is more classic than white. In interiors I love how white highlights good architecture, and any object in the room that has "good bones." White walls are a good backdrop for objects d' art and paintings that are placed in the room - white walls give focus to the lines of the items that are juxtaposed in front of them.   Painting a room white can make it have surprising depth. When designing an all-white room use several different shades of white to bring out the architectural details, or layer the space with strong forms in different tones and textures of white and then use some strong color contrasts to outline and bring the white into focus. My all time favorite white color is - Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White. It is a very soft white and easy to live with. It has a chameleon effect - taking on the colors of what is set next to it and changing in tone at various times of the day. Not every white is snow white. Try using whites tinted with: ivory, cream, antique white, and palest beige, blue and yellow. An interesting fact on the popularity of white is that Benjamin Moore has over 140 whites to choose from.   To maximize the light in a room I chose a paint with a semi-gloss finish rather than the latex matte finish more usual on walls. The "chalkier" matte finish absorbs light; the semi-gloss is more reflective.   Some of my favorite whites I use are from Benjamin Moore: Cloud White, Simply White, Ballet White, White Dove, White Linen, and Decorator’s White.

Outdoor Retreat

New Orleans is a city full of beauty. Some of my favorite spaces to visit are small gardens that look like they should be located in the heart of the French Quarter. You can transform your backyard into your own personal retreat by incorporating plants, furniture, lighting, and accessories.

When designing, think about things that can distract you from the beauty of your backyard. Water features can divert attention away from busy streets; mosquito netting can keep away insects; and a well placed outdoor fan can cool you off this summer.

Greenery is a must, if you don't like gardening, look into low maintenance plants that do not need constant trimmings. Also, consider using small stones or pavers instead of grass.

There are a ton of varieties that are not only pleasing to the eye, but they are also quite comfortable. I love the fleur de lis pattern on the hammock chair shown below. The weather in New Orleans has been a bit unbearable lately with the heat and the rain. But that does not stop us from having fabulous indoor dinner parties. These get-togethers are ideal for the budget conscious, especially if you decide to have a pot luck. Since the outdoors are less than ideal, why not have a summer themed table setting? For a beach feel, scatter shells on the table or display them in a clear vase, also use white and shades of blue. For a garden feel, look out in the garden for flowers or large leaves. Use vibrant colors, yellows and greens will liven up any party. Think about giving your guests a coordinating small gift so that they can always remember your event.
